Tiger Woods Wins Player of the Year Honors

Photo courtesy of Getty Images On Friday, the PGA Tour announced that Tiger Woods won the PGA Tour Player of the Year award for the 2013 season. It was a record 11th POY trophy for the worlds number one golfer and Jupiter Island resident. While Woods failed to win a major, he won five times in his 16 Tour starts. Woods won the Farmers Insurance Open, the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, and the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship making it the 10th time in his career that he had at least five wins in a season. There were a lot of people who said I could never win again, and two years later, Ive got eight wins on Tour, Woods said. It just makes it all the more rewarding. In addition to the Player of the Year trophy, Woods also took home his 11th PGA of America Player of the Year Award, his ninth Vardon Trophy for Adjusted Scoring Average, and his 10th Arnold Palmer Award as the PGA Tours leading official money winner. In addition to the Player of the Year honor, the PGA Tour also announced their Rookie of the Year Award winner. As expected, 20 year old Jordan Speith took home the Rookie of the Year honors after one of the best rookie seasons in the history of the game. After starting the season with no status on any tour, Speith took advantage of his sponsor exemptions recording nine top-10 finishes including a win at the John Deere Classic. Speith now not only has his PGA Tour card locked up for at least the next two years, he will also be able to compete in all four major championships this upcoming season. Other awards that have been announced over the last week include the Byron Nelson Award for Adjusted Scoring Averag which was won by Steve Stricker. Also, Peter Jacobson recieved the Payne Steward Award which is presented to a golfer who best exemplifies the values of character, charity, and sportsmanship.
